VIDEO: Digital artists create work inspired by brand new Lexus NX
Striking new car design is the inspiration behind breath-taking digital kaleidoscope
Artists are often said to take inspiration from the world around them, and that’s exactly what’s happened with digital art pioneers Hellicar & Lewis and their fascinating new digital art exhibition called NX-Perspectives.

The two artists, who have had a studio together for six years, partnered with Lexus to produce a unique piece of performance art, taking inspiration from the bold design of the new Lexus NX. It’s one of several pieces of art the car manufacturers have challenged leading figures in the fashion, design, and music industries to produce.
For NX-Constructed, Hellicar & Lewis set out to reflect the structure and form of the Lexus NX by constructing a digital kaleidoscope. For its interface, the kaleidoscope uses a series of shapes and forms that exist within the physical design of the car.
“The car itself has a very striking design,” said Pete Hellicar. “But the thing we were most intrigued by were the smaller details. [For example], you can see there’s almost a kaleidoscopic element to [the car’s wheels].”

By projecting 3D animated elements onto a range of physical materials, and capturing the resulting image, Hellicar & Lewis were able to create their online digital kaleidoscope.
The finished product can be interacted with by the observer, meaning that everyone who experiences the artwork can produce previously unseen angles and compositions in real time.

Hellicar & Lewis’ kaleidoscope is an ideal artistic representation of the new Lexus NX’s blend of luxury elements and practical features. The cutting-edge design and the car’s agility and stability on uneven road surfaces mean it’s extremely appealing to new customers who lead urban and active lifestyles.
“There’s a blend of both analogue and digital in the quality of the car, and the way it’s been designed and put together,” said Joel Gethin Lewis.
“We think that synthesis is something we wanted to echo in our project.”
Other pieces of digital art inspired by the car can be found on the NX-Perspectives website.
