New arty condom can be sprayed on like deodorant
It’s designed for women too
An enterprising art student has designed a spray-on condom.
Girplay comes in an aerosol can and can be used by both men and women.
Boys spray the condom onto an erect penis and wait for it to dry for 1-2 minutes, while girls squat while the product dries before pushing it into their cervix.
Romantic Michele Chu, who studies at New York’s Pratt Institute, hopes the contraceptive will “change the whole experience of love-making” in today’s fast-paced environment.
She claims its close-fit makes it safer and creates a natural feel.

Though only a design concept, Chu hopes that it will encourage interest in the new contraceptive.
Chu, who said the idea was aimed at “bold daring women”, created a “lovers kit” to accompany the condoms which includes a smart bra that can be removed by a remote control.
She said: “These spray-on condoms are made for the perfect fit, and function like spray-on bandages in the marketplace today.
“We create revolutionary spray-on condoms that are perfect for today’s fast-paced environment.”

In an interview with PSFK she said the condom market “needed some refreshing.
“Condoms look like those little ramen seasoning packets. They’ve just been these square things forever.”
The condoms are part of a revolution in contraception, which includes inventions such as the “smart” condoms that change colour when an STI is detected.
Innovative design student Michele Chu
Chu wasn’t the first to come up with the idea of spray-on condoms.
In 2008 German sexual health teacher, Jan Vinzenz Krause, created a prototype of the concept.
Krause’s design, which was modelled after the drive-through car wash, consisted of a metal cylinder with jets that spurted liquid latex.
Due to technical difficulties, however, Krause’s condoms were unsuccessful and never reached mass production.
How to use the spray-on condom
For him:
- Take off the safety ring, point nozzle and spray onto erect penis
- The spray must begin at the base of the erect penis and worked up and down vertically, then horizontally, for full coverage
- Leave to dry for 1-2 minutes before further sexual contact
For her:
- Find a comfortable position. Lie down, sit or squat
- Take off safety ring, point nozzle and spray directly onto vagina or anus
- This should be left to dry for 1-2 minutes, then, push the dried condom into the vagina until it reaches the cervix before further sexual contact with your partner
