A list of Tory MPs who voted to slash disability benefits while claiming huge expenses
What a lovely bunch
According to Labour analysis, 200,000 disabled people will lose almost £3,000 a year each as a result of Chancellor George Osborne’s cuts to disability benefits. The changes have been described as “devastating” by disabled charities.
Owen Smith, shadow work and pensions secretary, said the government’s latest cuts were insensitive and targeted “people who are not able to manage toilet needs or dress unaided.”
Shehab Khan is a journalist who mainly writes about politics for The Independent. This week he started tweeting a list of Tory MPs who have voted to cut disability benefits whilst simultaneously claiming huge expenses.
First up was James Duddridge the Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East. He claimed £161,597.44 in expenses in 2014/15.
Next was George Freeman the Member of Parliament for Mid Norfolk. He claimed £176,387.08 in expenses in 2014/15.
Next up was Michael Fabricant the Member of Parliament for the Lichfield constituency in Staffordshire, who claimed £111,130.58 in expenses during 2014/15.
Richard Fuller, the Member of Parliament for Bedford and Kempston claimed £144,767.91 in expenses in 2014/15.
Finally there’s Mark Francois, the Member of Parliament for Rayleigh and Wickford. He claimed over £120,000 in expenses last year.
To put it all in perspective, here’s a story about a partially sighted amputee with type 1 diabetes. He is facing the loss of his disability benefits after being told he no longer qualifies for the help. Shame he doesn’t have any expenses to claim.
