A 21-year-old student has appeared in court, charged with involuntary manslaughter for the death of her boyfriend.

Inyoung You has been accused of causing her boyfriend’s suicide, after she sent messages such as “do everyone a favor and go fucking kill yourself”.

Inyoung’s lawyers have claimed the prosecution is cherry-picking text messages to harm her character for a fair trial, telling the Daily Mail it was a “cheap pursuit of headlines”.

Inyoung’s boyfriend, Alexander Urtula, died by suicide 90 minutes before his graduation from Boston College.

Alexander died after jumping off a car park roof. The court heard Inyoung tracked his location on her phone.

In the lead up to the 22 year old’s death, prosecutors allege Inyoung sent 47,000 messages over a two month period, often telling Alexander to kill himself, or claiming she would hurt herself if he didn’t.

Inyoung’s lawyers argued the couple had a toxic relationship and deny the charges. The court heard Inyoung had attempted to stop Alexander’s death, saying “baby please stop”.

Her lawyers are currently trying to overturn a protective order disabling them from releasing other text messages between Inyoung and Alexander.

The case has been compared to the Michelle Carter trial, where Michelle Carter was jailed for involuntary manslaughter after texting her boyfriend Conrad Roy to kill himself.

Steven King, Inyoung’s attorney, said: “Never in my career have I seen more unjust and callous behavior from a DA in what I can only conclude is the cheap pursuit of headlines.

“When the facts come out it will be clear – these were two emotionally needy young adults whose relationship had become a toxic blend of need, anger, fear and love. They simultaneously faced the everyday pressures all post-adolescents encounter from family, friends, social media, college life, and the things young people try to navigate every day. And they lived their lives on their phones in a way that is hard for many of us to understand.

“No one can ever know to a moral certainty why someone decides to take their own life. Suicide is always sad, always a tragedy and always mysterious. We should be looking for better ways to support young people in these situations instead of prosecuting them.”

Inyoung pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in November. Her appearance in court on Tuesday was a pre-trial hearing.

She will return to court February 20th.
