Applications for The Tab Inclusivity Internship 2020 are now open
Applications close on the 31st October
Applications for The Tab Inclusivity Internship 2020 are now open and we’re looking for the best rising stars to join us at The Tab HQ.
The Inclusivity Internship, which is new this year, is open to student writers from BAME backgrounds only, so that the next generation of journalists can be more diverse. News coverage and the media should reflect the people it caters to, and we want to reflect that as well.
We are offering one-week remote placements, which will involve you in every aspect of our editorial output, from breaking big stories, writing the hottest trash TV takes, creating powerful opinion pieces to managing social media.
You do not need any prior experience writing for The Tab, but you should be a committed writer (e.g. you have a blog, write for a uni paper or another publication) and be currently studying at a UK university.
Due to ongoing lockdown restrictions across the country, internships will be taking place remotely. We have offered remote internships before, this summer, and they were a complete success – with interns joining the office (virtually) week by week for four months. Dates will run from the 23rd November to the 18th December, with a break for Christmas, then from 11th to 31st January.
What will you be doing?
Every morning between 9am and 9:45am, the team trawls the internet for new stories, and at 9:45 we have our pitching meeting, where we discuss what we’ll be writing that day. The ideal candidate is someone comfortable finding original ideas for stories and confidently pitching them.
As an intern, you’ll become a member of the editorial team, and you’ll have the opportunity to write and publish multiple stories every day. You’ll work full days, 9am-6pm, for a week. The content on our site is varied, and you should be ready to write stories like these ones produced by our interns this summer:
• Top private school ‘exaggerates’ predicted grades so more pupils will get into uni
• I asked eight of my dating app matches why they ghost women. Here’s what they had to say
• Order a Pret and we’ll tell you what your type is
• Medical student creates handbook to show symptoms on darker skin
• People on TikTok are freaking out over the 27th August and now I am too
• These are officially the most expensive uni halls in the country
Somebody from HQ will be in regular phone contact to give you help and advice, so you’ll be brought into the team as much as is possible in these weird times. It’s a great experience to put on your CV and will teach you loads of skills if you want a job in the media.
How to apply
If you are interested in applying for The Tab Inclusivity Internship 2020, please email [email protected] with answers to the following:
• Come up with three story ideas that you think would work well on our site
1) An experience feature (but be careful not to break government corona guidelines)
2) A news story
3) A fun feature (e.g. a quiz, a listicle, or a meme round up!)
• Send links to three things you’ve written (if possible) that you’re the proudest of and in a sentence tell us why.
• Tell us, in 100 words, what you as an intern would bring to The Tab.
The Tab Inclusivity Internship is for students identifying as BAME only. Internships will take place remotely. We will take into consideration everyone who sends in an application, but due to demand, we can’t take on everyone.
Applications close 31st October.
