Second year cyclist calls for compulsory helmets after terrifying collision

She was hit on St Clement’s

A cyclist has called for more students to wear helmets after she was hit by a car.

Paige Clarkson, who’s in second year, escaped serious injury when she was knocked over earlier this month, thanks to her helmet.

The English Language and Communication student was wearing high-vis bands and had rear and front lights, but still the driver didn’t see her.

The collision happened when a car on St Clement’s didn’t indicate left.

Paige said: “I was cycling along a straight road at quite some speed. A black car in front of me turned left suddenly and I couldn’t stop in time, and I swerved into the back left of his car.”

Paige was even wearing hi-vis

Oxford is notorious for their dangerous roads and there are many collisions every day, but many cyclists still refuse to use the safety gear needed to be safe on the Oxford roads.

Paige added: “The doctors seemed very pleased I was wearing a helmet, and that it did its job.

“If I hadn’t have been wearing a helmet my injuries would have been a lot more severe.

“I probably would have lost consciousness, had a major head injury or even died. I’m now scared to go cycling for a while and I just wanted to warn people.”

Paige’s helmet saved her life

Already Paige’s story is making a difference.

Second year English language student, Lauren McNamara, said: “My housemate just bought one today because of what happened, so Paige has obviously made a difference.”
