Blues trash Lions 77-0

Cambridge Blues 77 – London Scottish

A feast of tries saw Cambridge’s premier rugby team sweep past a select side from London Scottish which included some of the best young players from that club’s senior academy, with this particular side being called the “Rampant Lions”.

Cambridge opened their account after only two minutes, with Don Stevens breaking impressively in midfield after some strong forward play. Stevens was to score the conversion, and the following eleven, showing himself to be an extremely consistent kicker who was central to the Blues’ game as he moved the teams around the pitch.

An opportunistic tap-penalty from scrum-half Harry Peck brought a rapid attack deep into the Scottish twenty-two, giving fresher prop Will Yeeles all the time he needed to surge over the line for his debut try in in the shirt.

With more tries from the Blues the score came to 42-0 at half time. At this point many teams would have eased off, especially with a view to big upcoming fixtures. However, Cambridge were in no mood to let up, and this really spoke volumes about this side’s appetite. Every time a try was scored, it seemed that Cambridge were looking forward to the next attack, rather than reviewing those that had come before. Hopefully this should stand them in good stead next month.

The Blues pack put in an extremely good shift in the second half, overpowering the Scottish side in the ruck and maul, and being rewarded with tries for Jack Baker,  Sam Alderson and Sam Farmer, among others. In the final quarter the Lions capitalised at least partially on a string of penalties, with some forays into the Blues half that were sorely lacking for the first sixty minutes of the game. However, the Cantab indiscipline was not followed up with points as the home side’s defence held firm.

This rollicking victory should give Cambridge confidence for the Varsity match, which will undoubtedly be much more hotly contested. Nevertheless, one can be sure that the team will be taking it one game at a time, and looking forward to next week’s fixture against the MR Steele-Bodger XV.
