Cambridge Union will be open to all for first week of term

The Cambridge Union is set to open its doors to all Cambridge students for the first week of Michaelmas, with non-members able to attend the first three events of term.

Kicking off the term card, the Union will host Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing along with his business partner Ed Williams on the 2nd October. Laing, heir to McVitie’s fortune, founded the stylish confectionary range Candy Kittens after receiving £300,000 in crowdfunding.

As well as discussing their journey as entrepreneurs in the sweets business, Jamie will also be happy to answer any Made In Chelsea related questions.

Striking a slightly more serious tone, the Union’s first debate will feature the motion ‘This House Has No Confidence In Her Majesty’s Government’. Featuring Tory MPs Anna Soubry, a notable Tory rebel over Europe and frequently in opposition to the government over many issues, and Andrew Mitchell, infamous for not knowing what the national minimum wage.

On the opposition side, there is Labour MPs Mark Hendrick and Charles Clarke, former home secretary,  Co-founder of the Women’s Equality Party Catherine Mayer and DUP politician Simon Hamilton. The debate looks set to address both Brexit, austerity and a myriad of other issues that the nation faces.

Last time Toff came to speak at the Union

Last but certainly not least, the Union will be hosting a debate “This House Would Rather Be on Reality TV” featuring none other than Love Island’s Marcel and Gabby as well as the return of Made in Chelsea’s (MIC) Georgia Toffolo (Toff) and Sam. In spite of being hot favourites to win the competition, Marcel and Gabby, the couple who stayed together the longest time, came 4th. They will be debating against a University Challenge Team, who remain undisclosed.

From this sneak peek, it looks like next term’s Union line up will have a good mix of fun and serious events.
