How to throw the ultimate Eurovision watch-party

Everything you need to know to get ready for this Saturday

Ahhh…. It’s that time of the year again. Before you mentally prepare yourself to cringe like you’ve never cringed before, feel more patriotic than you ever did during the coronation, and scream “DOUZE POINTS!” at your TV (pronounced “dooz pwa” obvs), here is a list of everything you can do to host the ultimate Eurovision watch-party:

Organise a sweepstake/competition

What’s life without a little low-stakes competition? Put everyone’s names in a hat, the first name picked gets first choice of country, and so on. Choose your countries after the performances have finished to help fill the excruciating gap between the last performance and the announcement of the voting.

Food, food, food

An integral requirement of being a hostess-with-the-mostess is good food. Pizza is a classic for a reason, and you can never go wrong with chips and dips (unfortunately the Americans got this one right- it sounds much better than crisps and dips).

Drinking game

Are you really a student if you watch Eurovision without playing a drinking game? There are almost infinite rules you can add to a Eurovision drinking game (it truly is a content gold-mine), but here is one my friends and I (drunkenly) came up with last year:

Take one drink if:

  • The UK gets zero points
  • Graham Norton makes you laugh
  • The hosts make an awkward joke
  • There is terrible back-up dancing
  • You can see a rainbow flag

Take two drinks if:

  • You can see sequins and/or feather
  • There is confetti
  • There is technical difficulties
  • The spokesperson for their country milks their time

Take three drinks if:

  • There is a smoke machine and/or dry ice
  • The performance is unbelievably camp
  • The performer winks at the camera
  • You can see a man-bun
  • Someone emotionally sings on their knees

Down your drink if:

  • Someone falls over
  • There is a wardrobe malfunction
  • Your chosen sweepstake country wins
  • The UK gets 12 points!

And most importantly… have fun!
