Student ‘Safe Walk Scheme’ is recruiting volunteers

This follows more alleged assaults in the Cathays area

The ‘Safe Walk Scheme’ is run on a volunteer basis to walk students home after Wednesday and Saturday nights out.

Alastair Babington, a second year genetics student founded the project and will be working with the Safety Bus Scheme to patrol the Cathays and Roath area.

Volunteers will have first aid and confrontation management training . A DBS check will be required.

More volunteers are needed so the scheme can operate in September 2016.

Following the events of this morning Alastair stated: “It shows these attacks are not just exclusive to freshers week. We hope to operate as many nights as we can with twice a week being the standard.”

“We’re currently about 18 strong so more volunteers are needed to help reduce the workload. Students can choose how often they volunteer with once a month being the expected minimum.”

If you are interested in taking part you can contact Alastair directly at [email protected] or join the group’s Facebook page.
