Fairground rides to close at Christmas at the Castle

Cardiff Council have announced that the fairground rides at Cardiff’s Christmas at the Castle will close. This is a result of the rise in Coronavirus cases in the run up to Christmas.

In a statement on Cardiff Council’s social media, it was announced that the rides would be closed from December 14th.

The statement issued said: “In light of school closures to help pupils and families self isolate in the run up to Christmas to help curb the rise in COVID infections, the council has taken a decision to close the fairground rides at the castle #keepcardiffsafe”

This follows the announcement that skating attractions in Cardiff and Swansea were not permitted to open.  

This decision comes after concerns about the attractions remaining open were raised by Wales’ chief medical officer, Frank Atherton. Atherton spoke at the Coronavirus briefing on Wednesday saying: “I am worried, I will be honest, that we still have Christmas fairs and we still have Christmas attractions running in some of our major cities. I think we should be questioning some of that”.

First Minister, Mark Drakeford, spoke in the Welsh Government this Friday afternoon about the rise in cases. Drakeford said that the Coronavirus situation “has deteriorated even further and is very serious indeed”.

It was announced that all secondary schools and colleges will move online from Monday, all outdoor attractions will be closed, and that a new four-level ‘alert system’ would be published next week.

The number of Coronavirus-related hospital patients within Wales has reportedly passed 1,900 for the first time, and is still rising.
