Edinburgh’s teaching is the worst in the country

Only 50 per cent of us think it’s satisfactory

Just over half of Edinburgh is satisfied with the quality of teaching they receive from their lecturers.

In a survey for The Sunday times, second and third years across the UK were asked a variety of questions to establish how good they thought their feedback was. They were asked if they thought feedback was given quickly, how detailed it was, and how helpful the lecturer’s comments on their work was.

But it’s not all bad news, as research quality at Edinburgh is still very high according to the Complete University Guide showingour lecturers may be more interested in their own research than teaching.

He doesn’t seem to care

The government survey comes as universities prepare to raise tuition fees above £9,000 from 2017. Only universities that pass tests for teaching quality will be allowed to up their fees.

Edinburgh is joined by five other Russell Group unis in the bottom ten for satisfaction of feedback. Bristol, King’s College London, University College London, Glasgow and the LSE all fared poorly in the survey.

Scotland!

Satisfaction was low throughout Scotland with four of the least content eight universities coming from north of the border.

Edinburgh thought their feedback was much worse than city rivals Napier despite ranking considerably higher in real university league tables.

He’s happier about his teachers than you

The findings may say more about the students than the lecturers, with Edinburgh students potentially being harder to please than their neighbours. It seems unlikely that Edinburgh students would have bought into this cringy police safety video campaign as much as Napier students.

The Guardian’s university league table, the one that matters

In the 2016 Guardian University league tables and the 2016 Complete University Guide, Edinburgh came bottom of the Russell Groups for student satisfaction of lecturer feedback.
