Police officer stabbed at Edinburgh College this morning

A suspect is due to appear in court tomorrow

An Edinburgh police officer sustained non-life threatening injuries after being stabbed in the back this morning.

The incident took place at the Granton Campus of Edinburgh College at around 9am while the officer was responding to an incident involving an armed man threatening to cause harm to himself and those around him.

The Chair of the Scottish Police Federation, Andrea MacDonald, has commented on the incident, saying that Edinburgh's police officers are "not suitably equipped to deal with an incident where an individual is armed."

MacDonald's comment has been followed up with a statement sent out to parents by the Principal of Edinburgh College, Annette Bruton, which said that: "The college will remain open, in line with guidance from Police Scotland. Officers have cordoned off part of a very small section of The Hub while they carry out enquiries."

It has since been reported that this was an isolated incident and a 19 year old male suspect has now been charged and is due to appear in court tomorrow.
