Green Machine Rolls On
Sports Ed Jonny Buck summarises this term in uni sport.
As we come towards the end of what has been a spectacular first term for Exeter sport, we examine the impressive results from this season in more detail.
Overall, Exeter teams have secured 454 wins so far this season, with a win rate of 62%. This means that Exeter currently stands 5th in the BUCS league table, and although a certain Chelsea boss wouldn’t be too happy with that, it is certainly no mean feat given the tight nature of the table;
Specifically, Hockey unsurprisingly leads the way within the uni with 270 BUCS points, whilst tennis comes second with 199, and Rugby Union 3rd with 136.
Rugby union has been particularly impressive so far this year, and despite having a relatively inexperienced squad with some talismanic leaders leaving last season, 2nd year captain Rich Sinel has stepped up and led the Men’s 1s to top of their BUCS division, level on points with Cardiff Met. Furthermore, the Women’s 1s have also performed admirably, including a record 101-0 over Cardiff.
Lacrosse has also been something of a surprise package this year, with both the men’s and women’s 1s lying 3rd in their respective tables, also being complemented by the relative strength of their 2nd teams.
However an often much maligned sport, Squash, has been on the rampage this year. The Men’s 1st team have lost only one game this year, winning many of their matches 5-0, whilst the 2nds remain undefeated and the 3rds and 4s top their respective divisions.
That last point just goes to show the strength in depth in Exeter sport, and hopefully gives some support to those clubs that didn’t have any members get BNOC nominations.
