Suspected racist attack on Exeter student

Man spat in student’s face as she walked back from campus


A student has reported being attacked by a man whose only motive appears to be her race.

Sonia Kwong was attacked as she was walking home from campus by a middle-aged man who spat in her face.

The incident took place on May 1 at 6pm on Union Road.

Sonia said: “I was on my way home from the university main campus when a guy walked past me and then suddenly turned and spat in my face, right next to my mouth.”

The 26-year-old psychology student has been studying away from her home in Hong Kong for three years.

Sonia said she has been made to feel very welcome in Exeter up until this point.

The police helped her by driving around to try and track down the attacker, but were unable to find him.

Sonia believes the attack was racist. She said: “I am just a normal girl on my way home and the only thing that stood out to me was that I am Chinese.

“I have had flashbacks. It was just so disgusting and dirty as it landed right next to my mouth.

“There was a young boy there who saw everything and he came up and said that this man had let the whole city down – I feel the same.”

The suspect is described as short, middle-aged, and wearing a tracksuit.
