The Tab’s Housing Guide: Mount Pleasant
The Tab brings you the inside scoop on Exeter’s key areas for student housing.
Mount Pleasant is a bit like Marmite: people either love it or hate it.
In my opinion, however, Mount Pleasant offers the best that Exeter has to offer – with few of the downsides.
After Prospect Park lies the start of Mount Pleasant.
You get much more bang for your buck in this area, with better houses than the likes of Vic Street at better prices.
The price is probably the biggest seller (there are hardly any houses over £100 a week), and those savings can be particularly convincing when you consider how much longer your heating can stay on.
Five minutes away lies a student’s shopping paradise: Morrisons.
If you’re worried about carrying your shopping home, Mount Pleasant is pretty perfect.
At one of end of the road lies Morrisons; at the other, you’re only a ten minute walk from Waitrose, and on your walk home you’ll be going by Saunders.
There’s even a pretty-looking church.
For fans of Arena, the main route into town from Mount Pleasant brings you out by the Odeon, and the likes of Monkey Suit and Timepiece are only a short way further down Sidwell Street.
If you’re keen on Mosaic however, you’re probably not going to be such a fan.
I’m not sure if these road works will ever be finished.
I’ll admit that campus is a bit of a walk from the furthest points of Mount Pleasant (about 20- 25 minutes), and the hill up to the Sports Hall can seem pretty daunting.
Aside from that, big open spaces, parks, and plenty of natural light into your room means that Mount Pleasant is a solid choice for anyone about to move out of halls.
