A leading adventure sports website has named Glasgow’s skiing and snowboarding club as the snowsports kings of British universities.

Cooler Lifestyle, which covers outdoor and adventure sports, named Glasgow in a recent list of the UK’s best universities for surfers, snowboarders and skaters.

GUSSC’s President celebrates the accolade

The acclaimed lifestyle site said our uni’s proximity to mountains such as Glencoe and indoor and outdoor slopes like Xscape and Bearsden meant it was hard to find a better place to study if snowsports is your game.

This year Glencoe had some of the best powder in the world

GUSSC are notoriously proud of their club, and their stickers can be seen on the walls of everything from the GUU to Geneva Airport.

As Glasgow University’s biggest club they are always out in force, whether on the annual Alps trip, the dryslope championships in Edinburgh, or one of their many massive socials.

Even Sydney Harbour Bridge loves Glasgow

Current GUUSC President, Michael Clark, spoke to Tab about the achievement: ”It was really fantastic news to find out that we’d been named best uni in the UK for snowsports.

Delighted as I was, the news to me wasn’t that surprising when I think about how much the club has developed in recent years. The club is growing year on year and now has over 700 members joining each year making us the biggest club in the university.

One of our proudest moments came last year when we sold out 500 places on the ski trip to the Alpes in less than 24hrs and we hope to do the same again this year! It proves that you don’t need to be super serious about sport have a successful sports club.

We encourage everybody people to join, regardless of whether they’ve skied all they’re life, want to try something new or just fancy cheap holiday. GUSSC has been providing glasgow students with good times for over 60 years now, so we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.”

The award is just one of many triumphs for Glasgow, which has also recently been listed in The Guardian’s list of top universities, named as one of the best universities for nightlife by VICEand topped tables for student satisfaction.

On top of this, our University Challenge team qualified for the live shows and one of our very own, Laura Muir, competed in the 1500m race at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing. So overall, it’s a pretty good time to go to Glasgow.
