KCL Careers Services causes outrage with tweet using ‘America’ to describe the US

Geography is no laughing matter

Furious students kicked off after unsuspecting KCL career services referred to the US as America.

They used America to describe the United States, leading to embittered accusations of “white centred geography” and “Eurocentric arrogance”.

KCL Mexican society was the first to strike, claiming the tweet sneaked across the border into disrespect by implying America to be a country, rather than a continent.

The KCL career services hit back, pointing out North America and South America are separate continents, and America is a generally accepted term for the US.

But this only caused more outrage.

The fact the original tweet referenced America and not the Americas was lost on the fuming Latins, as calls for an apology were voiced for the “inappropriate and offensive tweets”.

LSE student Ayden Ferdeline finally smashed the Career service Piñata with his mother of all comparisons.

He said: “By your logic, then, South Africa is a separate continent to Africa, and Africa is a country.”

Surprisingly not everyone shares the sentiment.

Third year Law student Seth said: “Call me old fashioned, but I grew up in a time when America meant Texas, Motown and the old red white and blue.”

Sarah, a Comparative Literature fresher, said: “It just seems like the Mexican society are just looking for an argument with a front of ‘fighting discrimination’.

“It’s pretty obvious that KCL careers weren’t being discriminatory.”

An apology has not yet been issued, but the tweet has been deleted.
