One in 25 students at Newcastle will be a victim of violence or sexual offences

We’re also one per cent more likely to be a victim of crime than Northumbria students

One in 25 students at Newcastle University will be victim of violent and sexual crime according to new statistics.

The Complete University Guide took the number of crimes reported from July 2015 to June 2016 per 1,000 residents within student areas. These crimes include burglary, robbery and violence and sexual offences. They found Newcastle University had a total score of five per cent for all crimes reported. Four per cent of people are likely to be a victim of violence and sexual offences. While burglary and robbery rates are at one per cent.

Newcastle students are one per cent more likely to be a victim of total crime and violence and sexual offences than Northumbria students. In February a disabled fresher was mugged on campus outside Merz Court and back in March the West Jesmond ‘AC Silver’ jewellers was burgled.

These statistics are based on all residents and not just students, the results are taken within wards or electoral divisions weighted by student population.
