With Freshers' Fair nearly over, Freshers' Week in full swing and over 160 societies to browse through, it probably all seems a little bit confusing for scared little first years. But we've decided to be super helpful and do half of the job for you…we've compiled a list of a few societies for you to learn about. But don't forget to look at all the others on the Uni website, there's definietely something for everyone!
Afro-Caribbean
Cost to join: £5
Meetings: N/A
What's it about?: "AfroCaribbean Society represents those who are of African and Caribbean decent as well as those interested in our culture. Freshers should join because ACS is a family community in which diversity and culture is celebrated and where knowledge is expanded."
Agricultural Society
Cost to join: £20
Meetings: Bar crawls every other Monday, night out every Wednesday
What's it about?: "The Agricultural society is the oldest in Newcastle university history and has continue to thrive through its reputation as being the wildest society on campus. Whether we’re at a agric rugby social, bar crawl or one of the balls, you never fail to be entertained, in one way or another…Freshers should join because it’s a great hub for members of Newcastle whether an agricultural student or not, everyone’s welcome and it’s a great group of people to be apart of."
Caledonian
Cost to join: £12
Meetings: Every Thursday
What's it about?: "Caledonian Society is based around traditional Scottish dancing, more commonly known as reeling. CalSoc revolves around the two balls and a less formal Christmas event, organised by the society. Reeling is very sociable and a great way to meet like minded people, due to the practices, held weekly, in order for everyone to learn the various steps. These are for anyone who has never reeled before, as well as a fun practice for those who know the dances already."
Cheese and Wine
Cost to join: £10
Meetings: Varied depending on events
What's it about?: "Founded in 2016 the Cheese and Wine society is MATURING every year! Last year we had over 130 members and we want you to be a part of it too! If you think you’d enjoy trying GRATE unique cheeses and drinking wine, then this is the society for you."
Cocktail Soc
Cost to join: £7
Meetings: Varied depending on events
What's it about?: "Cocktail Society offer heavily discounted masterclasses and socials in some of the best cocktail bars in Newcastle, learning how to make some amazing cocktails from the professionals. We’re a lovely society, very welcoming, and you don’t have to drink to be part of it! There are always non-alcoholic and mocktail options available, so there is never any pressure to drink. Freshers should join because we are a big society on campus, so they have the chance to meet a lot of new people, and they get to learn a new skill along the way."
Dance
Cost to join: £35
Meetings: Weekly
What's it about?: "We have 21 classes weekly, all different styles and for different abilities; ranging from beginners to advanced. Some people may only come for one hour a week, or some may come to 10! You can be as involved as you want. In March we also hold our annual showcase, which is chance to show parents, family, friends and flatmates what we've all been working on all year."
Debating
Cost to join: £7
Meetings: Every Tuesday
What's it about?: "Debating Society will fund you to travel around Europe to do competitions and meet a fantastic, diverse community of people, all whilst you’re learning how to win arguments you thought you knew nothing about and helping to boost your confidence and having fun."
Fashion
Cost to join: £8
Meetings: Varied depending on events
What's it about?: "The Fashion Society is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of a creative, inclusive community, where you will make friends for life. Any member has the opportunity to take a break from their studies to learn the art of fashion illustration, sewing, modelling, blogging, whilst attending socials. We also host an annual fashion show which is a great opportunity to work as a team and develop your professional skills, creating something spectacular!"
Feminist Society
Cost to join: £5
Meetings: Every Wednesday
What's it about?: "We are an intersectional, anti-racist, trans-inclusive feminist society who care about working for equality for all people – open to all genders and existing knowledges of feminism! Come join us this year for socials, guest speakers, craftivism, feminist film club, discussions, self care workshops, and so much more!"
It Happens Here
Cost to join: £5
Meetings: Every Sunday
What's it about?: "We are going to be running discussions and talks around sexual violence and stigma, peer support groups for those who have suffered or experienced SV, safe socials which are nights out with sober committee members who help get people home and self-care evenings. Freshers should get involved to help raise awareness of this issue on campus, whilst taking care of ourselves, raising money and having a great community!"
Newcastle Comedy Society
Cost to join: £5
Meetings: Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday
What's it about?: "Newcastle Comedy Society hosts everything Comedy related; we have 3 sessions a week for Stand-Up, Improvisational and Sketch Comedy respectively, which you are welcome to watch or perform (or a bit of both!). We don't only perform within our Society, the North-East (and beyond) host some of the UK's finest comedians and we host regular trips to The Stand to go see them!"
Newcastle Disability and Neurodiversity Society

Meetings: Varied
What's it about?: "Newcastle University Disability and Neurodiversity Society is a society targeted towards creating a social space for students with disabilities and neurdiverse conditions, as well as for carers and people wanting to learn how to support disability awareness. As well as socials, we run campaigns, discussions, talks and much more."
Newcastle Uni Boob
Cost to join: £5
Meetings: Organised around events
What's it about?: "Newcastle Uni Boob team is here to raise awareness of beast cancer and encourage all students to check their boobs and pecks. We raise money for CoppaFeel! through doing different events- usually this involves a lot of glitter and dancing around in giant boob costumes."
RAG (Raising and Giving)
Cost to join: £5
Meetings: Varied depending on events
What's it about: "RAG is a society all about fundraising for charity and volunteering. Our main event is RAG Week where we have an event each night with things like bingo and "Take Me Out"!!"
Sober Socials
Cost to join: £5
Meetings: Every Thursday
What's it about?: "Sober Socials puts on regular non-drinking socials for anyone to join, whether you're tee-total or like a drink but would just like a break from the other drinking socials! We create a relaxed environment for people to be able to get to know each other and make friends, which can be great for freshers to meet new people without having to do so in a noisy club!"
Stu Brew
Cost to join: £10
Meetings: Organised around events
What's it about?: "Stu Brew is Europe's first student led microbrewery giving members an opportunity to experience all aspects of a commercial brewery. Members can design their own beer and see it brewed on a commercial scale of 1700+ pints. From brewing to drinking there's various ways to get involved with society."
