Relationship v. Singledom: Who has the better deal?

Sex life, money, your mental health (did we mention sex?): Who really comes out on top? Bfs and Gfs, or singletons?

| UPDATED

Relationships. For some they are the key to happiness. For others they are less fairy tale romance and more of something to be avoided, like the plague or charity workers in the street.

One thing’s for sure, both camps have their ups and their downs.

1. Sex

They certainly look happy – but is this a committed couple or a one night stand?

Sex is healthy for a relationship and pretty enjoyable, so having a constant sexual partner can only be a good thing, right? The downside, however, comes in monotony, something the life of a singleton doesn’t suffer.

So while HMS Relationship can fail to maintain excitement, singledom can be more fun. Especially on a night out, where you don’t know if you are going to get some, who it might be with, and what they might be up for.

2. Costs

It all adds up …

The majority of us don’t have lots of money to spare and relationships… well they’re not exactly cheap! Dates, birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s, Christmas and holidays… you need presents for all of them and the costs add up. Although loved up couples tend to go clubbing less than singletons, overall being single is the more cost efficient option.

3. Distance

Long distance love: too good to be true?

If you’ve met your hubby before uni, you’ll be in a long distance relationship. This means two things:

1. The amount of sex goes down,

2. The cost of the relationship goes up.

I’m no scientist but I can safely say this is a significant factor in why the majority of relationships don’t survive the first semester.

But that’s not to say relationships are all about money and sex, and to appease the devout relationshippers who are no doubt frothing at the mouth yelling “You don’t know what I am talking about” at the screen, my last point is:

4. Emotional Support

Calm down

Being in a healthy relationship, always having someone to talk to, is great. Having someone to vent to and make you smile, well that’s something lone wolves just don’t have…..oh wait, yeah they do. They’re called friends.
