Oxford students wear white ribbons to exams in solidarity with survivors of gendered violence
Students urged to wear white ribbons on sub fusc for exams
Siobhan FentonOUSU’s Wom Cam team launched a new campaign this evening urging students sitting exams this term to wear white ribbons on their sub fusc.
The white ribbon is a symbol of solidarity with survivors of gendered violence.
A statement on the Wom Cam Facebook page this evening urged students, “If you have exams this term, wear a white ribbon on your sub fusc to show your support”.
It continued, “[students who wear ribbons] pledge never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women, and to stand with the survivors of gendered violence”.

One student told the Tab why they’d be swapping their carnation for the ribbon, “it’s time for students to take a stand against gendered violence. This is just one small, symbolic way in which we can show that it is never acceptable”.
The move is inspired by the ongoing ‘red tape’ protest in the US, which saw students wear red tape on their graduation caps last week as they graduated from the University of Columbia- in protest against the university’s response to allegations of sexual violence on campus.
White ribbons will be available to collect at this evening’s Wom Cam meeting at Teddy Hall. For details on the event, click here.
