Man raped in PRYZM
Kingston nightclub blasted as a “highly inappropriate” venue
A man was raped in PRYZM, a popular venue for Royal Holloway freshers.
Police have recently released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to about the rape of a 19-year-old that took place in the toilets of the venue on April 3.
The man was seen leaving the venue on security footage and is urged to come forward as he may have information that will help the investigation.
In 2012, 20-year-old Jamie Sanderson was murdered during a function night on 25th October 2012. Two men are now serving prison sentences as a result.
The Kingston nightclub’s license was initially revoked after the stabbing, but the decision was overturned on appeal.
Oceana then underwent a 1 million pound refurbishment in October 2013, changing its name to PRYZM.
Despite the club insisting on their “robust procedures in place to ensure the safety of its customers including the use of 120 CCTV cameras”, some students have raised concerns about some of Royal Holloway biggest events taking place in a venue with such history.
Charlotte Cole, a third year student at Royal Holloway, said: “They should either be actively investigating how a crime like that could be go unnoticed in a place with so many people there… All these new students arriving to an unknown. It’s irresponsible.”
A spokeswoman for the club said: “The club’s toilet attendants were on duty on April 3 and this matter was not brought to their attention nor was any alleged rape reported to the management team. We will continue to cooperate with the police over this alleged incident.”
