Sheffield University reviewing security procedures in light of Manchester attacks
The UK terror threat has been raised to critical
The University of Sheffield have expressed their condolences and promise a “continual review” of security procedures, following on from the tragic events of Monday night in which 22 people died, including a woman from Sheffield, and 64 people were left injured.
The UK terror threat has been raised to “critical”, it’s highest in 10 years, meaning that further attacks may be imminent.
A University spokesperson told The Tab: “The University of Sheffield is deeply saddened by events in Manchester and extends its sincere condolences to all those who have been affected.
“The University, along with all other major organisations in our city, works closely with the police and security advisers to ensure the safety and well-being of our community of staff and students. This will continue to be the case. We keep our procedures and practices under continual review in the light of local and national guidance, an approach which is especially important in the light of the decision to raise the national threat level.
“While we have not been advised of any further security measures at this time, we will be closely consulting with relevant bodies on this issue and preparing in readiness for any further actions that may be needed.”
The University has also pledged to work closely with our Union of Students, multi-faith chaplaincy and other groups to encourage and continue their commitment to “cohesion, tolerance and respect”.
South Yorkshire Police have said that security around the city of Sheffield is set to be increased in response to Monday’s events.
Military personnel are going to be deployed to protect key sites, and South Yorkshire Police are urging people to remain vigilant over the coming weeks.
In a series of tweets sent by South Yorkshire Police, they said that the force are well trained and capable of dealing with the heightened security levels. They also reassured the people of Sheffield that they will be seeing an increased presence around the city, including an increase in armed officers.
Security at big events, such as tonight’s “The Courteeners” concert, and the IBF World Welterweight title fight between Kell Brook and Errol Spence Junior at Bramall Lane, will be stepped up as well. Full body searches will be taking place, and no bags will be allowed in the stadium, as well as having dog units in use.
They also said that in the case of a firearm or weapons attack, you should run to a safe place, hide somewhere, and phone the police when it’s safe to do so.
