Why do you feel that Association President is important to St Andrews?
The Association President position is vital in leading the combined voice of the student body. Even though the position’s duties are specified, I believe it is incredibly important to have at least a general understanding of all issues that the students are faced with. Solving accommodation problems, particularly its availability and quality. Promoting the University and its students nationally and internationally. Forming a constructive working relationship with University administration whilst being able to criticise and oppose its policies. Ensuring sustainable practices within the campus and in the local community.
What do you believe makes you especially qualified for the job?
A 12 year experience in living abroad in Norway and the UK, adapting to new and challenging environments without immediate family support, has taught me to be ambitious, proactive and self-sufficient. I have gained excellent communication and leadership skills that I have employed and improved through extensive participation in University life. In my role as the SRC Member for International Students, I have practical experience of representing 40% of the student body. I have reinvented the role by creating the International Students Forum where national societies are brought together to advise the Students Association on the issues facing the international students. This university has given me great opportunities and I am dedicated to not only ensure that others feel the same, but to set a precedent for effective student leadership in the future.
What are the three main principles that you plan to follow during your year as a Sabb?
My policy is 4-fold in reaching the essential level of communication between the Students Association and the student body. Value – ensuring that the student receives the best accommodation, education or general student welfare they can for the money, effort and time they put into the university. Leadership – leading the Students Association by always consulting the student body, taking tough decisions and staying true to my principles. Advocacy – persistently advocating student needs and wants within the University and promoting our world-class university across the UK and overseas. Diversity – embracing the huge variety within our student body, encouraging cohesion and ensuring accessibility and equal opportunities. V.L.A.D.
If you could make a major change in St Andrews today what would it be?
I would tackle the major problems in both accommodation and the state of the facilities. It is unacceptable that 1 in 3 applicants for university accommodation are rejected. Another issue is the library. It is unacceptable that the library lacks resources to adequately support students’ needs. I would adopt a pragmatic, but firm stance in negotiating a solution to these major problems. It is important that our facilities stay competitive with other top universities and satisfy our ambitious student body.
Any additional comment or message you’d like us to pass on?
If I am elected, I will ensure that this Presidency is All About You. The policies that will be put forth will reflect your views and you will no longer be kept in the dark. Together, we will achieve great results and become even prouder of what our University stands for. Visit my website for further information about my candidature.
