Trent Editor applications are now open
It’s actually really fun
Put that on your CV and smoke it.
All you have to do , email [email protected] and CC [email protected] by Monday 25 April with:
- 200 words on why you would make a good editor
- How you would add 10 reporters to our team
- If for Trent Editor: How will you double traffic this year? How will you double the size of our facebook page?
- If for a section (features, news, fashion, argument, sport or TabTV): Three huge and shareable article ideas, and one repeatable weekly article, eg Clubbers of the Week and Campus Style
On average our articles get over 8,000 views and our stories were in national papers more times than you were in Ocean.
Last year we brought you classics like that guy who blagged his way into the Rugby world cup and the girl who got grabbed by Geordie Shore’s Gaz.
Love us or hate us, you definitely read our stories.
Local Editor:
Local editors need to be confident in leading a team and holding weekly meetings, providing ideas and helping reporters get their articles published. You don’t need a degree in Journalism but you should have good basic writing skills. You’re also the first port of call between your team and head office, who you will communicate with daily.
News Editor:
This is where the real journalism happens. News is why The Tab exists and as editor, you’ll be on the front line, finding the exclusives which get everyone on campus talking.
News doesn’t work like other sections. A news editor’s job is to build a network of sources through contacts, connections and other members of the team, manage a group of reporters who can be on the scene as a story is breaking, and someone with good communication and organisational skills – so they get the right people to the right places at the right time asking the right questions when they’re there.
The measure of success is how many stories you beat your rivals to, but the extra bonus is seeing your story in all the national papers, which happens to a different Tab newshound every day. That’s why every paper wants to employ our News Editors: they know they’ve done proper journalism.
Fashion Editor:
Fashion Editors are good at making people feel comfortable – who doesn’t want to be told they’re dressed nicely? You’ll be out on campus snapping the best dressed at least once a week, but that’s not where being in charge of the Fashion section ends.
Use your creative flair to organise shoots using clothes from the local vintage store, or go and try on the best outfits for the AU Ball. Get the Fashion Society involved and see how you can work together. The section really is your own to be as inventive and original as you like.
Head of Marketing:
Reporters are The Tab’s engine of growth, and recruiting new people is the most important thing you can do for a team. As Head of Marketing, you are responsible for bringing in new reporters and making sure people know how to get involved.
The Head of Marketing is the socialite of The Tab and not afraid to schmooze the BNOCs, organise team socials, or approach people in the library to get them on board.
You will develop great networking skills, and you will have evidence that you are happy to approach people cold and win them over. These are two of the most desirable traits a job applicant can have.
Social Media Editor:
Students live their lives through social media, and it’s important to make sure people engage with The Tab on every possible platform.
As Social Media Editor, you’ll be in charge of finding the pictures, videos and tweets everyone talks about. We post at least one a day on Facebook, but you can use Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Yik Yak and anything else people are using.
The Tab’s voice should be communicated in everything we put out, which is why your sharp wit, sense of humour and understanding of what your peers are raving about it will be crucial to The Tab’s success.
Tab TV Producer:
Video is one of the most shareable contents on the web. Thousands of people watch our regular Boozenights and Tab TV Datenights were one of the most talked about topics at Trent. Applicants will have a keen interest for video and creative ideas which they can produce for the page and some experience with filming is required as well as access to equipment. You will have good ideas and will be encouraging towards others who display an interest in getting to grips with filming to editing.
We’re also looking for reporters across all sections, so if you want to get involved, it’s literally as easy as clicking right here.
