Love Your Melon visits children’s hospital in superhero costumes
‘I definitely left feeling #blessed’
Yesterday, BC’s chapter of Love Your Melon made a trip to the Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.
They hung out with 31 kids who are battling cancer and delivered 50 hats to children, siblings and parents.
Love Your Melon is an apparel company whose mission is to give a hat to each of the 45,000 kids in the US battling cancer. Through its buy one, give one program, LYM aims to personally deliver a hat to each of these children.
The group, composed of 20 members, is picking up traction on campus. LYM Crew Captain Alexa Liccardi (’17) said: “Once we got to the hospital we realized what we were doing all of this for – it doesn’t seem real when you’re behind the scenes on the Instagram, Twitter and Facebook and constantly encouraging sales all week until you’re standing in front of these children with a box of hats and being the person to put a smile on their face.”

Junior Maura Keefe said: “The best part of today was definitely seeing the smile on all the children faces and how excited they were that we were there for them.
Both the parents and children were so appreciative and thankful for such a small gift and I couldn’t have been happier to be part of that.
One of the girls in the unit heard we were coming around giving out hats, and she couldn’t wait for us to get to her room so she ran down the hall to meet us and pick out her hat. And the boy we saw first today came down the hall at the end of our visit to say bye to us and show us how he was still wearing his hat.”
Junior Becky Siegert said: “Visiting the children’s hospital today was such an incredible experience.
“My favorite thing was definitely seeing how happy the kids were to see us. I gave one little boy a sticker and he proceeded to peel it off the wrapper and stick it on me. It was so cute! I definitely left feeling #blessed.”
Alexa added: “Teamwork is a huge part of Love Your Melon and I think it’s awesome that everyone in our Crew considers each other a friend and that we can all have a great time together whether collaborating in meetings, visiting hospitals or visiting households.”
