Eagles hockey captain Ian McCoshen talks responsibility and privilege
‘Growing up with three younger sisters helped my hockey career by making me a protective player’
Ian McCoshen, defenseman for the BC men’s hockey team, makes a difference not only in protecting the net on the ice, but also in helping lead his team as an Assistant Captain.
The junior Applied Psych and Human Development major was drafted 31st overall in the second round in the 2013 draft to the Florida Panthers. But for now, BC relies on him as a valuable component to this year’s unmatched defense.
While he wears #3 and “McCoshen” on the back of his jersey, he’s a team player who takes more pride in the BC logo on the front.
The Tab got to hear more from Ian about his experience playing hockey on a national and international level, his take on Jerry York, and where he sees the 2015-16 season going.
What do you love about hockey? What about BC hockey in particular?
What I love about BC hockey is the support we get from faculty, students, and the greater community around Boston and the country. It’s fantastic. Regarding hockey in general, I’ve just always loved it. My dad put my on skates when I was young so it’s been a part of my life forever.
What is your favorite part of the team?
Probably being surrounded by the guys seven days a week for about three or four hours a day. We have a huge time commitment so we’re around each other a lot. It’s great.

What is it like being a captain?
It’s a huge responsibility and privilege. Hopefully I can live up to past BC captains that have won the national championship before.
What are you most excited about for this season?
Playing in the big games such as the Beanpot. I would be pumped if we made it to the Hockey East Tournament and played in the national championship.
What game are you most excited/nervous for?
Always BU series. There’s a lot of history and rivalry there.
What are your opinions on how the season is going thus far, even though you haven’t had that many games?
The season is going well so far and we definitely have a bright future ahead.
What are you focusing on individually? What about as a team?
As a team our collective goal is to play in the national championship game. Individually, I just want to help my teammates out as best as I can.
How are the new freshmen adjusting to the team?
They’re adjusting well. It’s always a learning curve but there’s nine of them so they always have someone to lean on.

What is it like to play for Coach Jerry York? What kind of coach is he?
He is a very unique guy. Always has a positive attitude and he never says anything bad. I think the best thing about him is that he teaches us great life lessons.
Describe Jerry York in one word.
GOAT (greatest of all time).
What was it like growing up with three younger sisters and how did it influence your hockey career?
Growing up with three younger sisters helped my hockey career by making me a protective player. I look out for people in that regard.
Coolest place you’re traveled to for hockey?
Definitely Russia or Malmö, Sweden. I went to Sweden two years ago around Christmas time to play in the world junior championship. It was awesome.
Favorite women’s sport team at BC?
Hockey.
Black or white backpack?
Black.
