Is Eagles Teddy Doherty the nicest hockey captain ever?

‘I just want to make sure I’m a good leader for the team and an all-around good guy’

Senior defenseman Teddy Doherty is next up in our hockey interview series.

The English major, originally from Hopkinton, Mass, sat down to talk with The Tab about pregame rituals, what he’s excited about this season, and what it’s like to be captain.

What do you love about hockey? What about BC hockey in particular?

I love when the Superfans show up to the game and they get passionate. It’s great when they yell at the other goalies.

What are you most excited about for this season?

We want to raise a banner or two and definitely make it to the National Championship. If we win some trophies that would be a great way to leave my mark.

What game are you most excited/nervous for?

I’m definitely not nervous for any game. BU is a big game but I’m really looking forward to Notre Dame. They’re a huge rival and the game is home on November 21.

What are you focusing on individually? What about as a team?

I just want to make sure I am a good leader for the team this year and an all-around good guy. I want to help out the younger teammates get acclimated to Boston College, and Boston College Hockey in particular. I want to make sure they know the roots when I leave.

How are the new freshmen adjusting to the team?

They’re adjusting really well. All of them are great guys with great characters. All around they are good guys and they fit what a BC hockey player should be.

What’s it like being a captain?

It’s been a new experience for me. I’ve never had a letter on my jersey but it is an exciting challenge. We have a great group of guys so it makes my job easy. I love leading these guys, it’s really an honor, and it’s not hard at all with this group.

Do you have a pregame ritual?

I drink three coffees on the day of the game and right before game starts, I sit next to Thatcher. We have six to seven handshakes with the guys.

What’s been the most memorable part of playing hockey at BC?

When we won the Beanpot my sophomore year by beating Northeastern. It was 1-1 in the last period and our old captain Pat Brown scored a goal. The Beanpot is the best part of the year.

What is it like to play for Coach Jerry York? What kind of coach is he?

It’s amazing. He cares about every single one of his players. He is so passionate and has so much energy and is always the most excited guy in the rink. It’s his high energy that drives us to be successful.

Describe Jerry York in one word.

Fiery.

Coolest place you’re traveled to for hockey?

Probably Switzerland. I played on the US team and we got to visit a few cities there. It’s really an amazing place to visit and to play hockey.

Favorite women’s sport team?

Hockey team.

Black or white backpack?

White one because I lost my black one. I like the white because it has BC Hockey on it.

But actually I’ll go with black, it’s more humble.
