Friendsgiving: A former Vandy block comes together for a family meal

Getting 10 of us in one spot is a rare task that usually only Shea Field (#RIPShea) can do

What better way to spend your last lazy Sunday before going home for Thanksgiving than with family dinner among your best friends?

Our roommates from sophomore year are all scattered this year: some are on campus, some off in various houses and one all the way in Milan. Getting ten of us in one spot is a rare task that usually only Shea Field (#RIPShea) can do.

Luckily for us, the promise of good food and even better company is another uniting factor.

All of us are so different and come from different homes with their own traditions, so we decided everyone should bring something that reminds them of home.

Pictured in front is a failed Pinterest mashed potato recipe. It did not make the cut, there was store bought en route

In my house for all major holidays my mother makes carrot soufflé, so that was my choice. One year my mom did not make it and I don’t think I have ever seen my cousins so upset.

Needless to say, it hasn’t missed a holiday since.

(Note – this was the only vegetable present at Friendsgiving, but is coated in brown sugar.)

Another friend of mine is not from the US, so Thanksgiving isn’t a traditional family holiday.

In talking about what each were bringing to represent home, one friend said “I’m a Brit and Thanksgiving is not very big in my house, so I’ll be bringing slutty brownies.”

Pro tip: she made them half traditional (with Oreos in the middle) and the other half with Kit-Kats. It was a game changer.

Making meat for this event was most definitely a task in itself. There was NO chance any of the ten of us were going to make a turkey.

Two roommates stepped up and got us a honey baked ham (pre-cooked obviously). Although we did not have tinfoil to wrap it in (oops), it came out flawlessly.

Clearly she was very thankful for the ham

Pre-dinner was full of card games and catching up with one another, lively and excited. Friendly competition was out in full force.

Post dinner on the other hand, food coma was all too real.

Obviously we still had room for Liz’s Apple Pie and Emily’s Monkey bread though.

All in all, friendsgiving was a success.

Happy Thanksgiving from the former girls of Vandy 217!
