BC Club Ice Hockey is lit and they’re playing BU tonight
‘Pretty much my whole life is centered around the fact that I’m an elite club athlete’
“BU, PU am I right?”
We chatted with a couple members of the Men’s Club Ice Hockey team as they prepare to play BU in Conte tomorrow night at 7:45.
As someone wise once said about BU Club Hockey: “I’ve seen digital clocks with better hands.”
The D1 team’s hockey game against BU will go down over winter break, when all of campus will be emptier than O’Neill on a Saturday night. So this year, “the battle of Comm Ave is club hockey.”
As if watching guys knock into each other while skating on ice wasn’t incentive enough, Club Hockey’s Facebook event for tonight’s game is also offering two billion Gold Pass points to attendees.
The Tab sat down with juniors James Potter and Ciaran Cleary to talk flow, intimidation tactics, and preparation for the game.
The back of their head so lit
Why is club hockey basically D1?
James: We have the same gloves.
Ciaran: We put a lot of effort into it. There are kids who work out as if we are a D1 team who just don’t quite have the scoring hands or speed to be a D1 player.
James: We have the same hearts too.
Ciaran: We have the heart of a D1 athlete, I have the mustache of a D1 athlete, so I would say I’m an elite athlete. We approach every game as if we’re D1 athletes of the club level.
James: Yeah we’re the D1 of the club level, in a nutshell.
Does your team have groupies/puck sluts?
Ciaran: There’s a freshman on our team formally known as Hot Nick who wants the “hot” to be left out. But once you let the hot out of the bag you can’t put it back in.
James: He has resigned from his title as Hot Nick’
Ciaran: Do we have puck sluts? No. We have respectable women who love competitive club athletes and hearts of champions.
James: We don’t have time for puck sluts.
James busy, not having time for puck sluts
How have you been preparing to face BU?
Ciaran: I ate a lot of pie over break. I made a Facebook group.
James: It’s pretty lit.
Ciaran: We did some liners last practice. I look at myself in the mirror for an hour everyday saying “You can do it,” and then I say “No, you will do it.” I listen to Drake a lot. I listen to The Motto everyday when I wake up because it starts “I’m the f-ing man.” I listen to Worst Behavior because I’m gonna be on my worst behavior on Friday because it’s gonna be lit. Started from the Bottom because we’ve had a little bit of a rough patch but we’re gonna be here on Friday which is winning. Pretty much my whole life is centered around the fact that I’m an elite club athlete and inspired by Drizzy.
James: I was born for this game. I think I’ve been looking forward to this game my whole life.
After they scored against BU at their last meeting
What are your thoughts on BU and their team?
James: They’re a solid team this year and they didn’t graduate anyone but they’re still our rivals and we still hate them.
Ciaran: I know two kids on the team and they’re nice young men but I hate them on Friday and I hate that they invaded our Facebook group and I hate the fact they beat us our first time around. So all this hate is gonna shine through when it’s gonna be lit and I go HAM.
James: This is the only BC-BU hockey game that people will be here for this year. [The D1 game is over winter break.]
Ciaran: The Battle of Comm Ave is club hockey. Also they’re literally the worst. We played at their home rink and they had five people in the stands. So that means everyone hates them, whereas our club team – we’re just boys with everyone.
James: We had more fans there than they did.
It feels good to score against BU doesn’t it
How do you intimidate your opponents?
James: Cleary’s mustache.
Ciaran: I sit on the red line like this [see photo below] stretching out my groin, watching them warm up. And I just shake my head in disgust.
James: I just fire slap shots at the other side. And at their coach mostly.
Hockey players are supposed to have great hair. Who has the best flow on the team?
Ciaran: It’s T. Mac.
Ciaran doesn’t want Teddy to know he thinks so because his confidence is already off the charts.
Does your mustache take the place of your flow?
Ciaran: The facial hair game is pretty phenomenal on my part. It’s a lesser known fact of hockey but I like to say this is my little spin on flow.
Do you guys ever get sad that your helmet covers your hair?
James: I make sure that my hair sticks out the back.
Ciaran: I like the helmet because it adds a whole other element and then people don’t have to see my face when I screw up.
Your hockey bags are another level of smell that I didn’t know was possible. Do you still notice it, or have you gotten used to it?
Ciaran: I know that it smells. And I know there are times when it smells really bad, but it doesn’t phase me that much.
James: I associate it with hockey – it’s the smell of victory.
Ciaran: It’s men working hard for one common goal.
Pandora’s box (it smells)
Do you think carrying around your hockey bags makes you look tough?
James: They definitely increase my width when I’m walking through hallways. Banging them around on doors – that’s my intimidation factor.
Ciaran: I like it when I fly from San Jose and everyone in the airport sees the BC hockey bag. They can come to their own conclusions.
I heard Justin Bieber will be at the game tomorrow to show his support for Boston College. Can you confirm or deny this?
Ciaran: I don’t know if you’ve heard but Selena started dating Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals.
James: I thought she got back with Justin Bieber.
Ciaran: JBiebs is reinventing himself right now. I would say with Boyfriend he starting to make jams everyone could listen to, but he’s made it. I am Team Bieber. He’s trying to reinvent himself completely and he thinks the best way to do it is to become boys with the club hockey team, and so that’s while he’ll be here. He’ll probably go out with us after.
James: He’s trying to get Selena back through us.
Ciaran: Yea exactly. It’s like, “This guy plays for the Washington Capitals? I’ll go play for the Boston College Club Ice Hockey team to try to get her back.”
Describe BC Club Ice Hockey in one sentence.
Ciaran: A Friday night in the middle of Connecticut so my mom can watch me play the game I love with my friends.
James: Boston University Club Hockey’s worst nightmare.
Tomorrow night is GON BE LIT.
