BU designers are reinventing fashion

The ‘Decades’ of fashion on one stage

Boston University's Fashion and Retail Association, in collaboration with Verge Campus and Off the Cuff, presented their fashion show 'Decades' at the Metcalf Ballroom this past Friday.

Jocelyn Roseman (QST’18), President of the Fashion and Retail Association, told The Tab that this was the biggest show the organization has done yet, with the largest amount of student collaboration.

“This show is the biggest show we have ever planned not only because of the digitized elements but with the elements of BU," said Roseman.

Roseman said the theme of time was a key component to the inspiration of the designs.

“For the theme, one thing we talked about was the decades coming back in fashion, and how it’s the same," said Roseman. "We keep inventing the wheel in new ways, and reaching into and changing it a bit, so that it is something fresh, new and current.”

The designers were given four months to create their collections and got to decide what era they wanted to base their designs on. There was a wide range of chosen periods from ancient times, to the 50's and the early 2000's.

Every designer had a unique style within the inspiration of their chosen era. Each look was effortlessly worn by FAB models. The materials and colors for each collection ranged spectacularly, however, each collection harmonized with one another to display how intrinsic the decades of fashion truly are.

The fashion show itself was creative and the collections were very sophisticated. Roseman could not have said it better when she said that the BU "student population has so much talent.”

The Tab interviewed one of the designers on her experience being involved in the fashion show. Johannah Coichy (COM'21) said she was very excited when the Decades theme was announced.

“At the first FAB meeting regarding the fashion show, they told us that basically you have free reign to do anything, and the theme is going to be decades," said Coichy. "I kind of had in my head this vision of like a modern renaissance because there was something really regal and elegant about it. I really wanted to make it more modern and of today."

The designer said she was inspired by Alexander McQueen’s line and "Rousteing's use of contrasting textures and embellishments and fusing them together."

Neelu Mohaghegh (QST'18), Verge Campus BU Editor-in-Chief, said that they had collaborated with FAB in the past when the media outlet was not on campus yet. According to Mohaghegh, FAB helped them become a part of BU.

“This semester we created all the introduction videos under the name of Verge because we are a multimedia company," said Mohaghegh. "The videos we created definitely played a cool roll in the decades theme. When Jocelyn announced fashion repeats itself, it’s so true. We are able to recycle it and make it new."

Carli Schmidt (COM'18), Off the Cuff Editor-in-Chief, said they also collaborated with FAB in showcasing the designs through two videos.

“We have a bunch of staff members that work with FAB and they reached out to us to see if we wanted to showcase [some designs]. The videos were Little Kid Birthday and Family Dinner. They were from photoshoots this semester that we had created and we had videographers take videos during the photoshoots and edit them," said Schmidt.
