Everything all new CU Greek pledges will understand

Every girl thinks heels are a good idea… until bid day

Coming from way out of state, I knew I wanted to get involved in Greek life. Sororities and fraternities are an excellent way to meet people, even if you decide in the end that it isn’t for you. Rush week is super stressful and dropping out definitely crosses your mind. And although you might get dropped from a house that is on the top of your list and sprinting back and forth houses makes you sweaty, the sisterhood you find at the end makes it worth it.

The lack of a “Sorority Row”

The Hill is what makes CU’s nightlife so amazing. There are hundreds of houses where many CU students live, and sororities and fraternities are spread out everywhere. So, anywhere on the Hill you can find a party, not to mention Cheba Hut and Cosmos between for your late night snacks. However, the lack of a Greek Row means lots of running in between houses for datebook parties. Not to mention after rush, once you’re in a house that also means you have to walk to chapter meetings, and once it snows, Uber will have a lot of business.

Picking outfits

Although our rush process is shorter and more laid back than most other schools, picking “casual” to “slightly less casual” to “even less casual” outfits can be really confusing. Every girl also thinks heels are a good idea, until bid day when the blisters are everywhere.

The weather

According to our rho gammas, the bipolar weather in Boulder is a consistent issue. One minute, it is 80 degrees and sunny, and the next, it is down pouring, like, literally the hardest it has ever rained all year. Dresses get ruined and hair gets frizzy, but luckily the current sorority girls went through the exact same thing we did, so they totally understood.

The rejection

Going into rush, no one wants to expect rejection. However, 2016 had the largest rush class of 1,800 girls. With only nine sororities participating in official recruitment, it’s understandable to worry about not getting a bid. Luckily this year, every girl that stuck it out through the end found a home and every sorority gained 80-120 new pledge members on bid day. They tell you to trust the system and they mean it, even if a house doesn’t invite you back, because you will find somewhere you love (and you did).

Falling in love with literally every house

Every house has such unique architecture and let’s be honest- they are all seriously beautiful. Any girl would be lucky to live in one of these houses, but really anything is better than the freshman dorms. The girls are really easy to fall in love with too, and you seriously cannot go wrong no matter where you get a bid.

Falling in love with YOUR house

Once bid day rolls around, the nerves and excitement about finally being a part of a sorority hits every girl. As soon as you open your envelope with your bid inside and rush out of the field house to meet hundreds of new sisters, the feeling is indescribable. It becomes your home away from home, and your second family.
