Spoon University hosts pie-eating contest
With a cherry on top
Thursday’s sunny afternoon proved eventful with Spoon’s Pie Eating Contest in Red Square.
Spoon is a nation-wide organization that aims to be a food resource for members of our generation. Much like The Tab, it has chapters in different universities around the U.S.
The organization hosts food-related events around campuses, posts funny articles and delicious recipes on its webpage, and recommends restaurants around the country.
Before the contest began, The Tab went behind the scenes to gather the inside scoop about the competition.
Gaby Johnson, a sophomore and member of the Community and Outreach committee of Spoon works with the organization in hosting events.
Her goal is to increase Spoon’s presence around campus – which this pie-eating contest certainly helped with.
Spoon members told us they made an effort to find students on campus with big personalities to participate, in order to attract a lot of spectators.
Amongst the chosen competitors were members of The Corp, Radio personalities, and overall well-known students.
At 3 pm, the contestants were surrounded by their posses preparing for the gruelling event.
The victor would obtain a gift certificate for the famous bakery, Pie Sisters, and more importantly, the honor of being recognized as the fastest pie-eater at the greatest Jesuit University in the country.
As the minutes ticked down, the rowdy crowd started forming around Red Square.
Competitors lined up as the organizers sprayed obscene quantities of whip-cream on pie-plates. To top it off, a single red cherry was placed on the white mountain of cream.
Nerves were visible in the faces of more than one competitor. Would they come out basked in glory or would they fall short in the attempt?
Amidst the chaos, we were able to interview one of the crowd favorites, Ari Goldstein.
Ari told us he had been preparing all week for this event, and confidently explained his complex technique.
His strategy consisted of “scooping and slurping all simultaneously.
“I’m going to start around the edges, then work into the middle and finish it off with one last lick around the plate to capture the last bits of whip-cream.”
Unfortunately, our interview had to be cut short as the crowd screaming his name prevented us from hearing his responses.
The final moment arrived, and as Spoon organizers counted down, the competitors dove into their respective pies with impressive determination and valor.
Less than a minute had gone by when Ari had finished his plate.
At the same time, another competitor finished his, causing a great deal of confusion and unrest in the spectators.
Who had won? Who would wear the honors of honor?
Nick Storozynski, the 2015 winner, left
Out of the confusion and whipped cream came winner, Nick Storozynski, Georgetown University’s #1 pie eating competitor!
