Georgetown responds to threats on Washington
You’ll notice police on campus tonight
In a message sent to the Georgetown community, Chief of Police and Director for Public Safety Jay Gruber detailed the extra security measures on campus following “unspecified threats made against Washington, D.C.”
Gruber wrote in the email: “We are in close contact with the FBI and the Metropolitan Police Department to ensure we are doing all that we can to provide a safe and secure campus.
“You will notice increased visibility of police officers on and around our campus.
“We also count on our community to keep us safe.”
Georgetown students reacted differently to the potential threat to Washington and the safety of campus.
Senior Aziz Saqr said: “I think campus is safe, [but] I am being cautious and aware of my surroundings.”
Sophomore Alex Mason said: “I feel no real change as to the security of campus, not because these are threats to be trifled with, but because the possibility of threats becoming real have always been present.
“Whether it be a school shooting, or racist death threats, or terrorist attacks, we live in a world that’s as dangerous as ever, and we should acknowledge that, but living in constant fear of that danger is exhausting.”
The English major added: “I have a friend who commutes to his internship in DC multiple times a week, and he has told me that sometimes he wonders about how easy it would be for someone to blow up the train or gun down the people on the platform, and it terrifies him.
“But at the end of the day, he has to go to work and live his life, and he can’t do that if he’s always scared.”
Another sophomore, Paulina Calderon, said: “I’m feeling terrified and so limited.
“I don’t want to give them the satisfaction of our fear but am succumbing to it anyways.”
