It’s Super Bowl weekend at Georgetown

How are you celebrating?

A bunch of dudes from North Carolina are going to play a bunch of other dudes from Denver and a third of the US population will stop to watch. Where’s everyone going to watch it and how?

It is time for one of the most important annual sporting events to bring excitement to the Georgetown campus once again.  Now that all the annoying New England kids have finally shut up about the patriots the entire campus can partake in the fun.  Our campus and its location make for a great resource from which to enjoy the game.  Many different people will tune in to watch the pinnacle of American sports on Sunday night as the swaggering Cam Newton and the Panthers take on old man Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

NFL fans will be excited to see a legend play for possibly the last time against a dynamic talent in an excellent quarterback match-up.  More casual sports fans will partake in the yearly tradition for the excitement of the game as well as the hyped-up halftime show and hopefully funny commercials.  There are plenty of ways to enjoy Super Bowl Sunday on campus, but you should try to partake on some of the classic festivities.

Where to watch

This really depends on the person you are, for those looking for a very social setting, the HFSC TV lounge will no doubt fill up with football fans to watch and if it gets overcrowded or you get hungry the Bulldog Tavern has four flat screens to enjoy.

The Tombs and J. Paul’s also have a great areas for viewing football as well as a number of other popular bars in the area with many of them running promotions for the Super Bowl and giving GU students a chance to watch and drink where you are guaranteed to run into other classmates.

To be honest I would be most excited that Old Glory will be having a Super Bowl buffet.  If you happen to be a Jacksonville or Denver fan, or you have a more intimate setting in mind, having a TV in your dorm would be ideal.  If you have an apartment and want to throw a viewing party, just accept that everyone will probably be distracted from the game if beer pong gets intense.

Which leads to the next question for this Sunday.

How to party

The day after Super Bowl Sunday should be a federal holiday and the fact that we are expected to get up and take 8am exams and sit alertly through lectures is a crime.  So drinking the night of the Super Bowl has to be weighed against how well you can recover the next day.

In general, for a football game you want  to find the happy medium.  Judging from past years, the commercials have no chance of being funny if you are completely sober.  On the other hand, football games go slow and most of the excitement  is saved for the end, so too much drinking during the game will leave you most likely distracted toward the later part of the game and too drunk too early to go out after if you planned on doing so.  Either way load up on as many snacks and drinks as you can.  Football cannot be truly enjoyed unless it can be enjoyed with unnecessary carbs.  Remember some people won’t be drinking. No one ever realizes how much junk food a room full of college kids can eat when drinking.

Overall enjoy the game without annoying your RA too much (or just invite them) and get ready to watch what should be a great game.

Prediction: Carolina 27, Denver 20
