Teams to root for instead of Georgetown during March Madness

Time to hop on the bandwagon

It’s March, and this week is the start of one of the most thrilling events for Georgetown students. No, we are not talking about Farmer’s Market. We are talking about March Madness, and, sadly, this year we’re not in it. So its time to finish our brackets, which will inevitably will make us lose money to our less basketball-savvy friends, and find a team to root for together at Tomb’s and get blitzed whenever they win. Because let’s face it, march is just another boring, regular month without the inexplicable excitement of March Madness.

The underdogs: Dunk City

Team such as Florida Gulf Coast have a special way of getting into our hearts. I’m not sure if it is the thrill of a real-life David versus Goliath, or simply the passion that these teams bring into the sport, but there’s just something magical about Cinderellas producing upsets after upsets (even if it means against us like in 2013). Besides, a team that likes to be called “Dunk City” is sure to bring interesting slams for ESPN’s highlight reels.

Anyone playing against Villanova or Maryland

There’s no way of celebrating our rivalries better than by hopping on the hate train. After Villanova beat us twice this season, and Maryland once at the begging of the season just when our momentum was about to launch, it’s time for things to go south for them.

Anyone playing against Syracuse

Our all-time rival, Syracuse, deserves a separate mention for us to highlight all the reason why they deserve not to win. 1) There would be no better gift for Georgetown students this season than beating Syracuse at home, and they losing in the NCAA Tournament as soon as possible. 2) Do we need any further reasons?

Kansas

This one is just for those of us that hope to make a profit out of our brackets. Everyone is going to eventually place a #1 seed as champions, so it might as well be this one instead of North Carolina, a team that still has a pending tab with us after 1982. But, objectively, we cannot deny the remarkable effort that their players have been putting this season.

Michigan State

Spartans have been dominating almost every kind of competitive sports that we love here in the States. It’s not a coincidence that the least popular sport, soccer, is their weak-link and our strong suit. But anyway, we must highlight the season that Tom Izzo’s team, filled with young and veteran talent, has been able to produce. An impressive 13-5 record was just shy of a #1 seed, a truly sad story. And to further catch our attention, Denzel Valentine has had what is considered one of the best seasons by a Spartan. Averaging 19.4 point per game and a .447 3-point percentage, he has already is the Big Ten’s Player of the Year and is nominated for John Wooden Award.

Politics

Ohh, politics. Our faithful companion at Georgetown. The most popular subject of conversation besides the amount of work we have returning from Spring Break. There is no more favorite activity for Georgetown students than throwing irrelevancies, such as sports, to a side and focus our brain-power in high-level political discussion. So, we might as well hope for the best candidate to win this primary season.
