Georgetown sophomore launches business which links students to tutors
‘So many times, I wasn’t able to find a tutor in time for exam prep, I decided it shouldn’t be that hard’
You’re already stressed with an upcoming exam and the terrifying realization sinks in- you have weeks of unlearned material to cover in an extremely short amount of time. Doing it on your own is tough, but if you had the necessary help you know you’d do great. The problem is, finding a tutor on the hilltop seems close to impossible at times, only adding to the stress of your packed schedule.
Kevin Fleishman, a Georgetown sophomore, finally had enough with the strenuous process of finding a tutor- “knocking on doors” , “asking the deans”, and “sending Facebook messages to random people I suspected were capable of tutoring”. Does this sound familiar? Too many failed attempts brought Kevin to take matters into his own hands creating a standard procedure to link tutors to students here at Georgetown.
Outcome Tutoring transforms the jobs of both student and tutor into an effortless experience.
How it works
Outcome Tutoring is an organized system where students can book a tutor whenever they feel convenient. The tutors choose the hours that they are willing to work and the tutee signs up for a slot based on time and subject. Using a Squarespace site where users can go to the “book a tutor” tab, they then choose the subject they need help with, the specific tutor for that subject, and a time. They will then be prompted to make an appointment and payment.
Kevin explained: “Tutors email me what hours they will be available throughout the week, and I update their availability on the site to make sure there is no confusion.”
The target here is primarily intro level classes, increasing the steady supply of students who can tutor. The experience is completely tailored to your own schedule as there is no minimum amount of hours tutors must be available for, picking their times as they please. At the rate of $35 an hour, Kevin hopes Outcome Tutoring’s simple and affordable platform will revolutionize tutoring at Georgetown.
He told me: “Without this site, it is vey difficult for tutors to make themselves available to students. Someone who is really good at Accounting cannot simply run around campus telling everyone in sight in the hopes of securing a tutee. It’s extremely inefficient and ineffective. With this site however, tutors have to do no personal marketing. Business is brought to them.”
