George Takei takes audience to warp speed at IU Auditorium

Last night, actor and gay activist George Takei — you may know him from his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek— spoke to many adoring fans at the Indiana University Auditorium. Takei give the audience what they wanted with his trademark "live long and prosper" hand sign followed by his trademark slogan, "Oh my!"

Takei began the speech by detailing his childhood in Los Angles, and being transported to a Japanese internment camp during World War II. He spoke with great emotion about the topic and left the audience in shock.

The activist also spoke about his time as an actor and work as a social justice advocate for minorities and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

At the end of his speech, Takei took questions from Twitter submitted by audience members. He gave notable advice for working in the entertainment industry as a queer person and told fascinating stories about being on set during his run on Star Trek as Captain Sulu.

Takei’s words were so inspiring in fact, that one audience member shouted “Run for president!” which was met with laughter from the audience

Takei's fans gave him a standing ovation at the close and waited outside the auditorium to greet him and his husband Brad.

"The whole experience brought me to tears," a fan told me.
