Why cats make the best college roommates
Because they hate everyone, too
Everyone wants a pet the minute they have to say goodbye to theirs at the start of their freshman year of college. We all know having a loving, constantly happy animal would brighten our days and make school a little less painful. So why not get one? Sure, they can be expensive and a big responsibility, but it’s worth it.
Personally, I’m a cat lover, so here are all the ways adopting a cat while in college will change your life for the better (featuring adorable photos of my cat, Fitz, and my roommate’s cat, Nala).
Cuddles
Cats are tiny and love to sleep in dark, warm places, so don’t be surprised when they nudge themselves under the covers with you. They will make any nap better and will strongly support your habit of binge watching Netflix series (just in case you feel unproductive, you now have a reason to never leave bed).
They’re super low-maintenance
One thing cats have over dogs is they take very little effort to train. Mostly because they are too stubborn and independent to train, but also because using their litter box comes instinctually. Even if your dorm room is basically as big as a shoebox, all they need is their litter box and food and they will settle right in.
They can cheer you up when you’re down
It’s almost impossible to be upset when a cat is purring on your lap or staring up at you with wide eyes demanding attention. Finals week will be a breeze when you know you’ll be going home to your cat who loves you, even if you just miserably failed.
You can put them in cute costumes
Whether you played with Barbie, G.I. Joe, or Polly Pocket as a child, I guarantee that dressing your cat up in whatever you want is much more fun (and Instagram-worthy). Especially because they will be super grumpy about it, and cats are extra cute when they are grumpy (which is often).
They make you tidier
Caught in the act
A cat’s favorite thing to do is knock things over. Nothing is safe from their cute little swatting paws. Hide your kids, your wife, your electronics…really anything that isn’t nailed to the wall. Your room will be spotless.
They’re a built-in procrastination excuse
Homework? Nah
When you try to pay attention to something other than your cat, they won’t have it. I mean they actually won’t let you do whatever you’re trying to do. Whether it’s reading a book, your math homework, or typing a paper, they will walk right up and sit on top of whatever you’re doing. It’s a great excuse to procrastinate.
They make life more fun
They even make your selfie game stronger
Getting a cat in college means you’ll never be bored and you’ll always be laughing. They are interested in anything that moves, makes sound, or is possible to climb. Mine spends a lot of time angrily meowing at the ceiling and my roommate’s often tries to scale walls. Much more entertaining than going to a party, IMHO.
…so what are you waiting for? Hit up Craigslist and start browsing for kittens. You won’t regret it, I promise.
