We asked freshmen if MSU is meeting their expectations
Is it everything you hoped it would be and more?
There’s no question Michigan State is the greatest university in Michigan, and probably the world. But for first year students is it what they expected it to be? We decided to ask.
As freshmen students at MSU, you are required to live in the dorm so I had the perfect population of people to ask for their own opinions on their expectations for themselves during their first semester as college students. Here is what they had to say:
Nolan Arceri, Engineering, Freshman
“I think I did pretty well at meeting my expectations and I reached most of my goals. It was a little harder than I thought but for the most part I did pretty good.”
Kylie Doyle, Nursing, Freshman
“I had to adapt to living in a dorm and being away from my family and had to learn how to be on my own. I expected classes to be a lot harder than high school and they kind of were but they were pretty similar because I went to a college prep high school. But I think I lived up to my expectations by doing well and keeping up with the work.”
Kevin Kaschalk, James Madison/Pre-law, Freshman
“I was expecting it to be a lot harder than high school. There was a lot less homework but I really had to focus and manage my time better than I had before. I was pretty surprised at how well I did because there is no real way to check your grades but it ended up well.”
Monica McChesney, Chemical Engineering, Freshman (left) and Sydney Shellhouse, Biosystem Engineering, Freshman (right)
Monica: “I expected it to be really hard and work my ass off, which I did. I don’t think I would change anything, if anything I probably would’ve worked harder to study more.”
Sydney: “I expected it to be really fun because its a really big university and stuff. I did expect it to be really hard, which it was. I did have to study a lot, sometimes up to 7 hours a day which is quite a bit but it paid off and I did have a lot of fun.”
Emma Harker, Computer Science, Freshman
“I had pretty high expectations for myself and I met them all. One class did give me some trouble but overall I did well. I thought college was going to be harder than it was but having good time management skills helps a lot.”
Kylan Memminger, Political Science/Pre-law, Freshman
“My expectations for first semester was that I was going to make a ton of friends in my dorm and we were all going to be really close and have a big friend group. But when I came to school, I’m from Florida and I didn’t know a single person and the transition was a lot harder than I thought. But as soon as I went through recruitment and joined a sorority and met my little friend group and am happy now.”
