What you need to know about the MSU tobacco ban
It could cost you $150
We all know that it is technically illegal to smoke marijuana on campus. Michigan State has now taken the smoking ban further by banning all tobacco products starting Fall 2016. Even though the percentage of college age students (17-24) who smoke is only 17%, it is important to get the number down to the lowest possible amount. Students, staff and faculty are all included in those who will have to abide by the ban. Here are some important facts you need to know before you come back next month.
The ban starts August 15
The ban of all tobacco products starts on August 15th, 2016 and will affect everyone who is on campus at all times. The new ordinance applies to any and all MSU owned property (land and buildings) and parking lots including the ones used for tailgates.
It’s ALL tobacco products
What a tragedy, the ban includes e-cigarettes, vapor pens and chewing tobacco. Sorry fellas, now you can’t chew during class and let us all see that disgusting bottle of spit.
You can’t even smoke in your car
At least not while on MSU owned property. While driving throughout campus you are prohibited from smoking or using tobacco products.
Violation of the ban will cost you
$150 to be exact for just your first offense. And as broke college students, I’m sure that you need that money more than the MSU police department. Hide your kids, hide your cigs.
MSU isn’t the only school
Michigan State is actually the sixth Big Ten school to ban tobacco products on their campus. Ohio State, Indiana, Iowa and U of M just to name of few started the ban several years ago in hopes of creating a healthier campus for their students.
