MSU’s Sigma Nu fraternity under investigation related to scavenger hunt list
The list was found on campus and contains offensive tasks
Michigan State’s Sigma Nu fraternity is under investigation from the university and the IFC after an anonymous student found a scavenger hunt list that appeared to belong to the group.
A student found the list at a campus building and immediately reported the list to MSUPD, who then notified the university. Another student also shared the list with news outlets.
According to USA TODAY College, the list mentions a “variety of tasks to be completed by fraternity members and assigns points for each completed item. Tasks include engaging in and photographing sexual behavior, stealing and getting the door codes to sorority houses.”
The list also contained offensive tasks like getting a photo of a woman’s breasts with Sigma Nu’s Greek letters written on them, taking a picture with “at least 4 Asians,” stealing something for the fraternity house and getting a photo with a homeless person. Each task was awarded with a certain number of points.
Although the fraternity has denied any connection to the scavenger hunt list, the paper had multiple references to Sigma Nu and its Greek letters. An investigation has been launched in order to determine if there was any connection between the list and the fraternity.
Fred Dobry, Sigma Nu’s National Director of Risk Reduction, said Sigma Nu’s policy forbids scavenger hunts. Dobry also claimed the leaders of MSU’s chapter wasn’t aware of the scavenger hunt. The allegations are being taken seriously – the IFC considers this hazing and it is explicitly prohibited by Sigma Nu’s policy.
Michigan State’s Assistant Vice Principle for Student Affairs and Services, Terrence Frazier, says his office is aware of the list and has been in contact with the fraternity. Frazier also said the school works closely with Greek life and hopes fraternities improve the campus rather than cause harm.
