All fraternity activities suspended by Ohio State for possible student conduct violations

According to an announcement sent to IFC chapter presidents, all fraternity activities including socials, recruitment, and new member events have been temporarily suspended.

This occurred following ongoing issues within the IFC chapters at Ohio State. An email sent to the presidents of each fraternity cited "possible violations of the Student Code of Conduct" as the reason for the suspension. Eleven fraternities have been under investigation at some point this semester, which is more than a quarter of IFC chapters on campus.

With the current string of deadly hazing incidents cropping up across the country, it's no surprise Ohio State has decided to take action before the situation gets out of hand. The suspension was not put in place "on the nature of any specific case or cases", said the official statement from Ohio State. Along with the Code of Student Conduct, Greek organizations have their own set of values and standards they are required to uphold.

Senior Director of Sorority and Fraternity Life, Ryan Lovell, said "the university will not tolerate behavior that puts the health and safety of students at risk." NBC4 cites alcohol and hazing incidents prompted the suspension of the 37 IFC chapters.

The suspension will "allow the IFC community to pause to reflect and create individual, actionable strategies to ensure the culture of their organization is aligned with the stated values of Ohio State's Greek community".

Members are still allowed to participate in non-social events such as chapter meetings and philanthropic events during the suspension.
