UO administration releases statement following Trump’s executive order on immigration
He’s planning to hold a forum on Monday
UO President Michael Schill and Provost Scott Coltrane released a statement today recognizing the increased fear on campus regarding Trump’s Executive Order on immigration. In the midst of the uncertainty around campus, Schill’s message assured students that the university is ‘troubled’ by Trump’s actions.
His statement said:
‘We are troubled by the decision of the new US administration to begin a process of closing our borders by indefinitely banning refugees from Syria, and signaling a religious test for admittance of new refugees.’
‘Like other public research universities across the nation, the UO welcomes and supports students without regard for immigration status.’
According to Oregonlive.com, ‘school officials are creating an administrative position to work with students who are covered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy, which protects undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S as children from deportation.’
Schill also mentioned student resources that the school has put together for those who want support during this time such as services for international students con campus. Overall, he wants all students to know they’re appreciated at UO.
‘If you feel vulnerable and unwanted because of the US president’s actions, please know that you are welcome and appreciated at the UO,’ Schill said.
There will be a town hall tonight at 6 p.m. in the EMU ballroom that will feature experts on international immigration who will review the current state of affairs, answer questions, and reinforce that UO cares deeply about international and undocumented students. Everyone is welcome.
