Bernie Sanders is coming back to Pittsburgh
We know you missed him. And we did, too
Bernie is coming back to town. The Vermont senator will be in Pittsburgh on September 16 for a rally with Katie McGinty, the Democratic nominee for senator. The will be held at 5 p.m. at Carnegie Mellon University’s Weigand Gymnasium.
Bernie has made the Pennsylvania Senate race a prominent talking point in his post-campaign work. He endorsed McGinty because of her support for a $15 minimum wage, and has said that she would be a “welcomed progressive voice in the United States Senate.”
The race in Pennsylvania is one of the closest contests in the country, with Pat Toomey, the incumbent Republican, and McGinty running neck-and-neck. The latest Quinnipiac poll had Toomey leading by just one point, following a CBS News/YouGov poll showing the candidates tied.
The race is important for both sides because of the Republicans’ slim majority in the Senate. If Hillary Clinton wins, Democrats would only need to beat four Republican incumbents for their Senate seats in order to reclaim a majority. A Democratic majority in the Senate would give a President Clinton much more power than if the majority stayed in the hands of Republicans.
Besides Bernie, McGinty has garnered public support from other big-name progressives, including John Fetterman and Elizabeth Warren. Fetterman will be in attendance at the Sep. 16 rally.
The event is open to the public and should bring in a large crowd.
