In pictures: Flashback to lawn parties, when we were tan and unstressed
Remember when ‘What are you going to wear’ was an important question?
Midterms are coming. You are stressed out by the thought of becoming stressed out.
The darkness is setting in everywhere, starting at Forbes and creeping ominously up to The Street. Not that it matters – you won’t be outside for long enough to notice anyway for the next two weeks.
The world is collapsing around you and there’s nothing you can do about it, and non-stop studying for the next ten days probably won’t even make a difference so what’s the point, and why didn’t you just PDF all your classes and what if you fail out of Princeton and can’t land a job and never find love and die alone?
Deep breath. Before you collapse into a heap of res-college sweatpants, Small World, and MIA (midterms-induced anxiety), let’s take a brief moment to remember how happy and beautiful you were just one month ago.
Princeton Lawn Parties are a time-honored tradition. It’s basically just a music festival, but reimagined as an Ivy League event. To think that the most stressful question on our minds back then was “What are you planning to wear?”
At the time it seemed like it really mattered, and we were out to find the snazziest lawn party outfits on the biggest Sunday of the semester.
The romper – Chase Hommeyer, Freshman
We saw so many amazing rompers on Sunday, our heads were spinning. This trend is my favorite, and we’re so glad it was such a popular option at lawn parties this year. They work perfectly on both a function and a style level. With the floral pattern overlaying the bright blue, this was a beautiful choice.
Pockets are a girl’s best friend – Alex Aparicio, Sophomore in Woodrow Wilson
Forget about diamonds. The pocket is no longer to be underestimated. We liked Alex’s look when we thought it was a maxi dress. When we saw it was a jumpsuit…and with pockets, we knew we’d found a best dressed contender.
Timeless classic – Luke Barbano, Swarthmore sophomore
Luke might not even go here, but he certainly knows about those “wear pink on Wednesdays” type rules. He’s got the Ivy League look down pat. The magical formula? A patterned tie with ever classy tie-clip and a pair of chic sunglasses paired with a blazer perfect for fall in New England weather. Oh, and bonus points for the pocket square.
Casual prep – Alexander Robinson, Comparative Literature sophomore
On any other day of the year, we would never dare to call a button-down shirt casual. For a hot lawn parties day like Sunday was however, this look was perfect. We love the mix and matched style of his shirt, and the perfectly preppy pink and blue striped belt. And the most important part: the quintessential pair of chic sunglasses.
Two is always better than one – Francisca Bermudez and Jack Finlay, both Molecular Biology sophomores
This pair wanted to be photographed together—and who were we to turn them down? I was first drawn to Francisca’s beautifully structured lace dress. The multi-colored pastel striped shorts were just a bonus.
Suspenders – Andrew Nelson, German senior
We love how Andrew really spun the preppy look on its head with this one. Have you ever seen anyone rock pink pants this well, if at all? The suspenders really tie it all together. And the little flamingos on his shirt? Definitely my favorite part.
La vie bohème – Sophie Wheeler, Pre-med freshman at Rocky
We like how Sophie kept with the bright themes of the day but added a sort of hipster (in the most well-meaning meaning of the word) twist to it. She contrasted the light, airiness of her white, almost bohemian shift with her dark black combat boots to create a really cool vibe to her outfit.
The pink Oxford – Micah Herskind, freshman
We couldn’t resist a picture of SOMEONE in the classic pink Oxford. Our friend Micah swooped in to cover that gap in our list lawn party classics.
Sparkly pants – Naomi Lake, History junior
But in all honesty, this was one of the coolest looks we ran across on Sunday. When we saw her, we wished we had on sparkly pants. And a floppy sunhat. And beautiful watch to tie it all together. Alas, we have none of those things, but at least we got a really great photo.
Stripes! Carly Bonnet, Pre-med freshman
Honestly, if there are stripes involved, you’re probably ready for lawn parties. Blue and white is such a simple, yet sophisticated combination.
Tiger spirit – Alex Hsia, freshman and Christine Jeong, freshman
We’re lucky to have some super stylish friends to help us out on Sunday. Christine’s ensemble speaks for itself, each piece coming together perfectly. And what better for a Princeton lawn party than an orange bow tie? Especially when it comes with bright orange sunglasses to match?
Best dressed – Zenaida Enchill, English senior and Philomina Kane, Molecular Biology junior
Look how fabulous they look! They told us their dresses came straight from Ghana and immediately struck this winning pose. For us, these two probably took the best dressed prize.
