Take this seasoned senior’s advice on low key courses to switch into while you still can

Let’s be real, most of your required courses are not your absolute favorite and you will probably be taking the Hot Seat attendance quizzes from bed. But what if you could find an elective that you didn’t just B.S. to get the work out of the way? While you can still swap classes without a fee, consider some of these breezy yet enjoyable classes.

Any PES classes are a fun way to earn anywhere from one to three credit hours without having to sit through the typical lecture.

It’s good for you too! Maybe your New Years resolution was to be more active. Get out of that boring lecture hall seat and try some of these on for size.

PES 116 – Beginning Tennis

PES 114 – Exercise to Music

PES 116 – Golf

PES 115 – Bowling

PES 112 – Swimming

I for one can say bowling was a blast. I still got an “A” even when I didn’t keep improving throughout the semester, which had been the goal. Don’t worry, the only materials you need to buy is $2 worth of worksheets. You can use the shoes and balls they provide instead of buying your own.

HORT 360- Flower Arrangement and Indoor Plant Management

If you have a knack for aesthetics, this is the class for you. Even if it’s not, flower arranging seems like the most enjoyable and least stressful course. I heard the final is as easy as tying a bow because the final is basically tying a bow.

If you have pollen allergies, this may not be the class for you.

EAS 106 – Geosciences in the Cinema

This course is exactly what you think it is: a movie class covering earth, biological, and atmospheric sciences. It’s not a total blow-off class. The professor expects participation and discussion on the films shown. It’s still much more enjoyable than any Powerpoint lecture that has nothing to do with your upcoming exam. Sound familiar?

COM 114- Fundamentals of Speech Communication (Test-Out)

Everyone has to take COM 114. We all love to hate it because it really does suck. But this girl took the test-out. Yeah, you read that right. All I had to do was study for an exam and pass it. Note that you HAVE to pass this test the first time to continue on and you can’t retake the exam. It’s pretty easy if you take notes from the book. The second step is giving a persuasive speech on anything you want. They give you the guidelines and requirements, tell you when to meet, and just for 30 minutes you watch other students pass as well. You can thank me later.

NUTR 303- Essentials of Nutrition

If your major allows you to take a science without a lab, please take a moment of silence for all of those working on their lab practicals at the moment.

Done? Okay, Let’s continue.

Don’t be that optimistic student who thinks they can take on a science course with a lab. JUST NO. Save the time you would be spending during lab to go to the gym or take a nap. This nutrition class is a little unorganized but an easy grade. Take it online if possible. You don’t even have to go to class unless you like easy extra credit, which your grade will likely survive without.

However, if they stick that class in Discovery Park again… Have a nice walk!

FS 470- Wine Appreciation

Wine and class? Sounds like Grand Prix all semester. But this class isn’t just about toasting with your classmates and getting tipsy before the bars. I’m still suggesting it though. First, you can always take it pass/fail, and second, you now have your chance to become a wine snob. You pay big bucks to take classes here so you better take one that you actually take something away from.

My advice to you is to always ask around about classes before you register. There’s always those hidden gems that usually upperclassmen know about.

Don’t have an upperclassmen friend? Better get to work.
