I let my sisters style my look for Sylly Week

‘I wasn’t too keen on the idea at first, but ended up receiving a decent amount of compliments… so maybe change is good every once in a while’

One thing I love doing is getting ready for a night out. Being the girly girl that I am, I love the hair, make up and endless outfit choices that can set the mood for the night that awaits you. I use it as my me time. Putting your look together for a night out gives you confidence because that’s when you are making yourself look your best.

So, what would happen if I put this serious task in someone else’s hands? I let three of my closest friends with differing senses of style put together my hair, makeup and outfit for the first weekend back on campus and here’s how it went.

Default me:

First, here’s a glimpse at how I typically choose to style myself for a night out. I’m a big fan of a nice smokey eye and a winged liner and if I’m feeling really wild I’ll add a darker lip color. Next, my go to hair is a set of soft, volumized curls. Finally, my outfit; in the winter I like to stick with skinny leg pants paired with booties and topping it off with a trendy, flowy shirt or tank top depending on where I am.

Friday:

So the first day, I had my roommate Francesca pick my look for me. She is undoubtedly one of the trendiest people I know. Her knack for the latest trends and ability to pick what looks best on people made her an easy candidate.

Final thoughts:

This look was pretty good. She chose to dress me up for a casual night at the bars complete with a grungy rolling stones T-shirt, leather biker jacket and kick-ass black booties for a rougher look. She kept the makeup on a lighter, more neutral side to balance out the dark clothing. Finally, she put loose beachy waves in my hair for a messy I-don’t-even-care look. I liked the outfit that she put together and will probably recreate it on a casual night. The makeup was very different, even down to the way she applied it. This was the first day, and I could already see how much of a challenge it is to have no control in what someone’s doing to your face. Overall the makeup ended up looking nice and I thought the application of foundation and light pink lip color was very complimenting.

Saturday:

The next day was Saturday, and that meant time to darty. I let my friend Anna take over this day. Her laid back sense of style would be perfect for a day party setting. She has a way of putting pieces together that make her look like a walking 90s Top Shop ad. I was excited and nervous to see what she had in store for me.

Final thoughts:

Wow, this was so different from anything I would’ve done. I knew this one would be a challenge. Very minimal make up was used, just a light layer of powder, mascara and nude shadow to cover up eye discoloration. Hair was left natural and pulled up into a fun little party pony. Lastly there was the outfit — distressed jeans, vintage crew neck and good ol’ high tops. This is the effortless, cool 90s vibe that the stylist gives off. However, I’m not too sure I fit that bill. I will say this day was refreshing to be able to go out with basically no make up and comfy clothes. It liberated me in an odd way to feel more comfortable in my own skin.

Sunday:

So the final night out finally rolled around and I let my friend Lindsay glam me up for a night out at the frats. Lindsay is the kween of all things makeup, and I felt comfortable with my face in her hands.

Final thoughts:

I actually loved this makeup. She used very professional techniques and she took the time to find colors that worked for me. She did a way darker smokey eye than I’m used too with dark creamy lips. She did straighten my hair, though, because she “never sees it straight”. There’s a reason for that — my hair is so thin, it makes me feel like I have none left when it’s straightened. I wasn’t too keen on the idea at first, but ended up receiving a decent amount of compliments on it throughout the night. So, maybe change is good every once in a while. The outfit was pretty similar to something I would’ve chosen, but paired with a woven kimono for the 10-degree weekend we had, which was a smart idea.

I think that there is a lot to learn in trusting your friends with something as important as your appearance. You might not even realize how important that is to you until you’re about to go out to mingle with your peers and you have no idea what your face is going to look like. There might be a look that you’ve been dying to try and it takes that push from someone else to get you there. I found out that trusting someone else who see’s you all the time on a look that will compliment you could actually be a good idea. Listen to your friends’ advice. Who knows? You might even get your new favorite look out of it.
