Dressing for fall at Rutgers with a few staple pieces
Also known as ‘no change November’
The stigma surrounding outfit repeating is pretty frustrating. Putting together a new outfit everyday requires a significant amount of money, which is why personal stylists exist for those rich enough to afford them.
When you find a particular combination of clothes you love, you shouldn’t feel the need to banish yourself from wearing them again. Still, the satisfaction of wearing something new or in a new way is undeniable.
For those of us who don’t have a wardrobe like Rihanna’s, here are some ways to keep your style feeling fresh.
Solid basics
Spend most of your budget on staple pieces that leave creative freedom to wear from season to season. It’s much easier to make new outfits out of the same pair of jeans than a pair of pink sweatpants that say “sexy” on the butt.
Layering
Adding a new piece over or under an outfit you already wore can give it an entirely different look. Wear a patterned shirt that peeks out under a plain sweater, and adapt summer clothes to colder weather by wearing tights and leggings with summer dresses, skirts and shorts.
Accessories and makeup
For those with a limited budget, changing up accessories and makeup is the easiest way to try out new trends and change up outfits. Throw a blanket scarf on to cover up the coffee stain on the top you also wore to work yesterday, or wear bold lipstick to brighten up the jeans and t-shirt you have been wearing every Monday since the beginning of the semester.
Outerwear
The laziest way to update an outfit is to wear outwear you haven’t worn with it before. No one is going to notice you wore that dress for an interview, class presentation AND graduation anyway, but switch up the jackets if you’re truly afraid there are outfit-remembers in your midst.
Wash less
You can wear things more often and save yourself laundry money by not washing everything after every single time you put it on. If it’s not dirty and doesn’t smell, it’s probably OK to wear again. Except underwear. Please wash that often.
